Franco Roero

In 1894 kocht Vicenzo Roero, na jaren zwoegen, de eerste percelen land op de Zucchetto heuvel in Montegrasso d’Asti, Piemonte en plantte na de verwoestende druifluis-plaag phylloxera zijn eerste stokken Barbera aan in deze historische ‘Grand Cru’ regio voor dit druivenras. In de jaren die volgden voegde Marcello en zijn kleinzoon Vittorio zorgvuldig percelen toe met groot potentieel. Vandaag de dag leidt 4^e generatie Franco samen met zijn vrouw Lucia en zoon Gianluca de familie business. Het areaal bedraagt 16 hectare, waarvan 12 beplant met Barbera, aangevuld met Grignolino, Dolcetto en Chardonnay. De bodem van de wijngaarden wordt getypeerd door mergel met lagen tufsteen en klei en heeft optimale drainage. In de wijngaarden wordt zo natuurlijk mogelijk gewerkt. Franco’s wijnen hebben bijgedragen aan het verbeteren van Barbera’s imago als wijn die zich kwalitatief kan meten met de andere grote wijnen uit de Piemonte.

In 1894 Vicenzo Roero, after many years of hard work, purchased the first plots of land on the Zuchetto hill in Montegrasso d’Asti, Piedmont and planted after the devastating phylloxera-plague his first vines Barbera in this historic ‘Grand Cru’ region for this variety. In the following years Marcello and his grandson Vittorio carfeully added plots with great potential. Today, 4th generation descendant Franco runs together with his wife Lucia and son Gianluca the family business. The acreage is 16 hectares, of which 12 planted with Barbera, complemented by Grignolino, Dolcetto and Chardonnay. The soil of the vineyards is characterized by marl with layers of tuff and clay and has optimal drainage. Practises in the vineyards are as natural as possible. Franco’s wines have contributed to improve the image of Barbera as a wine that can compete with the other great wines from Piedmont.
